Compliance activities

In cases where an inspection finds that a device is not measuring accurately, Measurement Canada employs a graduated enforcement approach, working with the device owner to institute corrective measures. The type of enforcement action depends on the severity of the measurement inaccuracy found during an inspection. In most cases the inaccurate measurement is corrected quickly.

In 2025,

693 Notices of noncompliance were issued when a scale, gas pump or other measuring device was not measuring accurately. The owner was given 14 days to have the device repaired.

1,268 Violation warning letters were issued for measuring devices that had not been recertified in accordance with their mandatory inspection frequency, or the device owner did not have their device repaired within the time period identified in the Notice of non-compliance.

54 Administrative monetary penalties were issued when device owners failed to take the corrective action identified in the 1,268 Violation warning letters.
