Manufacturers need a new cohort of workers with the skills necessary for a sector going through radical change. Companies that do training and skills development right will outcompete and outgrow their competitors and increase Canada's economic prosperity. The Advanced Manufacturing Cluster has succeeded in equipping the country's manufacturers to meet a do-or-die challenge: train a new cohort of workers in the skills necessary for a sector going through this radical change. The cluster is galvanizing ecosystem members to make sure needed workforce skills are informed from the top down by ecosystem leaders, rather than by outside forces. The Cluster has worked with ecosystem members to build programs that help the cluster and organizations understand the skills needed by organizations, and which take that information and build training courses for the workforce, giving Canadians the competencies organizations are looking for. Two examples of this effort stand out:
- The Transformation Leadership Program is a workshop for ecosystem leaders designed to change their thinking about their strategic objectives and needs. It gives them tools to self-assess their businesses, find areas that can be matured towards being globally competitive, correct areas that may stand in the way of success, and align their entire business with customers' needs. To date, more than 200 leaders from 30 ecosystem members have gone through the program.
- AmpUp is a training program that offers 95 courses in English and French to manufacturing workers. These courses cover technology focused topics like Industry 4.0 and data science, as well as teaching transferable skills through courses such as leadership, business management and sustainability. The Cluster developed the program by working with 22 partners across the country to supply training with a 50 percent subsidy. To date, 377 workers in the manufacturing ecosystem have taken advantage of the program.
