Canada's Advanced Manufacturing Cluster

The Advanced Manufacturing Cluster, NGen, aims to strengthen the competitiveness and growth potential of Canada's advanced manufacturing ecosystem, while contributing to solutions to address some of the world's most pressing challenges – securing supply chains, protecting the environment, improving healthcare and supporting technology adoption across the country, and positioning Canada as a leading green supplier of products to the world. The Cluster is leveraging Canada's technology and industrial strengths to promote the development, deployment, adoption and scale-up of world-leading capabilities in Canadian manufacturing.

Total funding: up to $427M

Technology focus: Automation, machine learning, cybersecurity, additive manufacturing (3D printing)

Ecosystem Benefits: The Advanced Manufacturing Cluster is supporting unique and integrated solutions in technology projects and ecosystem initiatives that will enhance Canada's advanced manufacturing workforce and strengthen the capacity of SMEs to manage successful deployment and scale-up of advanced technologies for manufacturing. For example:

  • The Advanced Manufacturing Cluster is investing in supports to strengthen the ecosystem by connecting existing clusters throughout Canada. By creating new innovation partnerships and business opportunities that each organization would not have on their own, this model is helping to solve industry challenges and enhance competitiveness. The Alberta Manufacturers & Exporters Enhancement Cluster (Alberta MEE) is a prime example of bringing together SMEs from across Alberta to connect and collaborate in developing new lines of business in advanced manufacturing and support workforce development.
  • The Cluster is also focused on helping to address a shortage of skills by offering manufacturers access to low cost modular education and training programs, and micro-credentials in partnership with colleges and universities across Canada. It also offers online executive education to help business leaders identify how they can best contribute to customer value, improve critical processes, and better understand their business and skills requirements for successful advanced manufacturing transformations.

Program Streams:

  • High Potential Technology Development — Developing and scaling new technologies with significant commercial potential.
  • Ground Breaking Process Transformation — Adopting advanced technologies to transform existing manufacturing processes.
  • Technology Diffusion — Expanding the user base for new and unique applications of technologies developed in Canada.
  • Ecosystem Development — Support for training, collaboration, and the development of tools and test beds; deepen connections among advanced manufacturing clusters that are part of NGen's cross-Canada cluster network.
  • SME Capacity Building — Strengthening and scale up for SME partners.
