Reporting a food-related measurement concern

Measurement Canada is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of measuring devices used in the buying and selling of goods on the basis of measurement.

Contact Measurement Canada to report a measurement-related concern about:

  • retail food measured and packaged in front of the consumer, such as meats weighed and wrapped at a deli counter
  • bulk or non-packaged retail food, such as loose fruit and vegetables weighed at the checkout counter

Tip: Look for a valid Measurement Canada inspection sticker on retail scales. The sticker indicates that the scale has been inspected and is accurate.

If you believe a measuring device is inaccurate, you may file a complaint with Measurement Canada.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for ensuring food safety and accurate food labelling, including the indicated amount of product contained in the package.

If you notice an inaccurate label on a prepackaged retail food product (i.e., measured and packaged at a manufacturing plant or retail store before being offered for sale to consumers), report it online to the CFIA. Report concerns about retail food produced, packaged and sold in Quebec directly to the ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ).
