Before you request a broadcasting certificate for a new term
The CRTC Broadcasting Licence and the Department’s Broadcasting Certificate are typically issued for a 7-year term, but the year of expiry is not necessarily synchronized between both. Certificate holders are required to provide documentation in order to receive authority to operate for a new term. Similar to the application process, the CRTC requires that holders demonstrate the renewal process of a certificate is underway. Consult the CRTC’s Practical guide to radio licence renewals for more information.
Broadcasting Certificate Renewal Process
In the month of November prior to the Broadcast Certificate expiry date, ISED sends a Broadcasting Certificate Issuance Form –Annex A, to the certificate holder to indicate that their certificate is expiring. To request a new term, the certificate holder is required to complete the form, providing the following information:
- Confirm if there have been any changes to the contact, physical address, email or phone number
- Confirm whether a certificate for a new term is required or not.
- Confirm if there have been any changes to the approved parameters and if so provide the details
- Provide an attestation to confirm that the installation meets all conditions of the certificate, including compliance with Health Canada’s safety code 6 (SC6) at all times
- For regular power stations (excluding Low power FM and standby transmitters), also provide:
- the maximum radiofrequency exposure level (% of the Uncontrolled Environment limits of SC6) at the site;
- the date of the report used to determine the maximum level of the SC6 limit; and
- the name of the person and/or company who created the report used to identify the maximum level of the SC6 limit.
The completed form is returned to ISED for processing.
An email confirmation is sent once the broadcasting certificate renewal has been completed.
Broadcasters can access their broadcasting certificate online using View or Print your Certificate on our Broadcasting Services page.
