Quantum in Canada

Quantum science, its study and uses, and an introduction to the National Quantum Strategy.

Quantum science is the study of how the tiniest parts of the universe, like atoms and particles, behave. Quantum objects follow special rules; they can act like both waves and particles. Scientists use quantum science to understand how everything in nature works at its smallest level, and it's helping us build new technologies, like super-fast computers and ultra-secure ways to send information.

Quantum technologies are a cutting-edge sector that could help accelerate the development of advanced manufacturing and create new jobs and economic benefits for Canadians.

By controlling properties at a very small (or quantum) scale, quantum technologies have the power to improve what digital technologies can do. These technologies will help make meaningful changes throughout Canada’s economy and society, in ways far beyond what is thought to be possible today.

The National Quantum Strategy guides this work and outlines the country’s goals and priorities in quantum innovation. Thanks to the discoveries made by Canadian scientists, students and entrepreneurs, quantum technologies are developing quickly. Canada’s quantum sector

As a global leader, Canada is a hub for quantum science, as well as research and development (R&D). It has over 100 companies working on quantum innovation, the second most in the world, each focused on developing new technologies.

Canada’s leadership in quantum science isn’t just about new ideas—it’s also about the people behind them and how they work together. Canada’s quantum sector is far from siloed—almost half of Canada’s academic quantum researchers discuss their work with potential users, and more than 40% are involved in quantum companies. This is how scientific discoveries and industrial R&D are translating into real-world products. Thousands of Canadians now work in this booming field, where universities, industry and government team up to explore new possibilities.

The Canadian quantum sector has received more than$2.8 billion in public and private funding, boosting the industry’s quick growth. From 2018 to 2022, company revenues rose by 93%, while the number of companies grew by 41%. Jobs in the quantum field also went up by an incredible 111%. Thanks to investments in research, talent and commercialization, Canada’s quantum industry is tracking to add $17.7 billion to the economy and create more than 157,000 jobs by 2045.

The government is investing in quantum R&D and projects that help turn ideas into real products. Budget 2025 allocated funding to help quantum companies stay and grow in Canada, making sure that we continue to advance technologies that will be key for economic prosperity and national security.

The future is quantum, and Canada is helping shape it!
